Gem Reactor: From Casual Idea to GameJam Highlight

When we joined the Gamedev.js Jam 2026, we didn’t expect much more than a fun weekend of coding and creativity. What started as a casual experiment quickly grew into Gem Reactor, a demo that surprised us with its reception and recognition.

A Casual Beginning

The concept was simple: create a puzzle-action hybrid that feels intuitive yet rewarding. With limited time and resources, we focused on two pillars—art direction and gameplay feel. The result was a colorful, reactive experience where players combine gems under pressure, balancing speed with strategy.

Standing Out in the Jam

Although we didn’t land at the very top of the rankings, Gem Reactor stood out for its art and playability. Judges and players alike highlighted the vibrant visuals and smooth mechanics, proving that even a casual prototype can shine when crafted with care.

Lessons Learned

Participating in the Jam taught us valuable lessons:

  • Polish matters: even small details in animation and feedback elevate the player’s experience.

  • Casual doesn’t mean shallow: a simple idea can become engaging when paired with strong execution.

  • Community feedback is gold: seeing others enjoy and comment on the demo gave us insights for future iterations.

What’s Next

Gem Reactor was born as a jam demo, but its potential goes beyond that. We’re exploring ways to expand the mechanics, add new modes, and refine the art style further. The Jam gave us momentum, and we’re excited to see where this project can go.
